Kyle Whittingham has finalized his offensive coaching staff at Michigan, and it includes several familiar faces from Utah.
In addition to Jason Beck making the move as offensive coordinator, four other coaches have followed the 66-year-old Whittingham from Salt Lake City to Ann Arbor, the program formally announced Wednesday.
- Jim Harding, a Maumee, Ohio, native and former head coach at Troy High School, will lead the offensive line. Harding spent the past 12 seasons coaching the line at Utah, where 11 players earned first-team All-Pac 12 or All-Big 12 honors. Spencer Fano earned consensus All-American honors and won the Outland Trophy in 2025.
Mike Lynch, a former running backs and offensive line coach at Nevada, has joined the staff as an assistant offensive line coach.
- Micah Simon will coach the wide receivers. A BYU graduate, Simon worked his way up the coaching ladder quickly, first an analyst under Beck at Syracuse in 2022, receivers coach at Northern Colorado in ‘23, then rejoined Beck at New Mexico in ‘24 and Utah this past year.
Marques Hagans, Penn State’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator for the offense the past three seasons, has joined Michigan as an assistant wide receivers coach.
- Freddie Whittingham, Kyle’s brother, will coach the tight ends. He’s been at Utah for the last 13 years, coaching tight ends and serving as recruiting coordinator. Tight ends were a big part of the Utes’ offense, and that is expected to continue in Ann Arbor. Dalton Kincaid starred at Utah in 2022.
- Koy Detmer Jr. will coach the quarterbacks. He filled a similar role last year at Utah, where he was considered an analyst and worked directly with Beck. Detmer’s track record with Beck goes back to New Mexico (2024) and Syracuse (2022-23), helping the up-and-coming coordinator with analytics, pregame planning and scouting.
Of note, and as MLive previously reported, Tony Alford was retained as running backs coach and run game coordiantor. Alford spent the past two seasons in the same role under Sherrone Moore, to great success. Michigan boasted the 14th-best rushing attack in the country behind Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall, and Alford recently delivered five-star running back Savion Hiter to the Wolverines.
Alford will be joined by longtime Michigan staffer Fred Jackson, who will remain on staff as an analyst with the running backs.
