As a Detroit Lions fan all of my life, I have seen some crazy stuff. I’ve seen Overtime Coin Tosses that have never occurred to another franchise. I’ve coaches that won other places join the team and be failures, I’ve seen Coordinators that were top candidates bomb out. I’ve seen MIRACLES to end games, I’ve seen injuries to players that wrecked seasons.
HELL I MET CHARLES ROGERS WHILE HE WAS HIGH AF WHILE WORKING AT MEIJER. I have seen THE GREATEST RUNNING BACK OF ALL TIME RETIRE RANDOMLY. As Detroit Sports Fans, WE HAVE SEEN LEGITIMATE BRAWLS AT SPORTING EVENTS. We had straight up hockey fights in the 1990s that went to 5 on 5 WITH THE GOALIES FIGHTING EACH OTHER. Things that never occur anywhere else, I seen my 2004 Detroit Pistons go on a miraculous run where they had crazy things bounce there way.
Today after watching 14 Detroit Lions games and spending the last 2 months watching the NFL and thinking the Lions would do what they always do and fight back. Today was going to the game and day when the lions stepped up and took control of their season. They would stop talking about #Grit and actually display and use Grit to come back and win, stopping the win one and lose one streak.. BUT NO. Let’s breakdown this dumpster fire of a game.
D.K. Metcalf Punches A Fan In The Stand
The NFL said in a statement it cannot intervene for an ejection of Metcalf.
“There was no flag on the field, so New York cannot weigh in with regard to a potential disqualification,” the NFL said in the statement.
So Metcalf punching a fan could not lead to him being ejected from said game, his 4 catches and 42 yards really did nothing in helping the Steelers to win this game. After this incident occured he was distracted and hurting the Steelers on the field. It was going well for us, as the defenses of The Lions and The Steelers were battling each other.
CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson was watching the area when the incident happened.
“He came over because the fan in the stands was holding a ‘4’ Pittsburgh jersey, he went over and the fan said something to him,” Wolfson said on the broadcast. “Obviously, Metcalf did not like what he said and you saw the swipe there. No Steelers came over to him and mentioned anything, we’ll see if the league takes action, guys.”
The Lions Were Down But Rallied Back
The hurt, demoralized and struggling defense was doing everything it could to bounce back and attempt to stop the bleeding. It was a wild finish, and it did not go the Lions’ way. While most of the game was also not going the Detroit Lions way. The Lions attempted to be like Lazarous and rise from the dead and try to seal the comeback and lead to a victory.
On 3rd-and-13, Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed an 11-yard pass to tight end Shane Zylstra, putting the Lions at 4th-and-2 on their own 35-yard line (a call that was upheld upon review)
The 4th-down pass intended for receiver Jameson Williams fell incomplete, but the Lions got new life when Steelers safety Kyle Dugger was called for a pass interference penalty, giving the Lions the ball on their own 49-yard line with a new set of downs. A tripping penalty on linebacker Alex Highsmith, who was chasing Goff and caught him by the cleats, gave the Lions the ball on the Pittsburgh 36-yard line.
Two plays later, Goff completed a screen pass to receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown that gained 24 yards and gave Detroit a 1st-and-10 from the 12-yard line. Two plays after that, a screen pass to receiver Isaac TeSlaa gave the Lions a first-and-goal at the 1-yard line, which initially led to a touchdown catch by St. Brown.
However, that catch was taken back on a pass interference call on TeSlaa, with a false start penalty taking the Lions back to the Pittsburgh 16-yard line with 22 seconds left in the contest. A 7-yard completion to Gibbs got the Lions to the 9-yard line with 16 seconds left, forcing Detroit to use its last timeout.
An incomplete pass put the Lions on third-and-goal with 11 seconds left, likely enough time for two plays, while an athletic catch attempt by TeSlaa initially looked like a touchdown but was ruled as incomplete as the rookie couldn’t haul in the catch. Goff then completed the 4th-down pass to St. Brown near the goal line, but as he was getting tackled he lateralled the ball to Goff, who ran it in to the end zone.
St. Brown Got called for Offensive Pass Interference after he had flipped the ball back to Jared Goff who ran it in for a touchdown. Neither of them officially counted as the Lions 1 point lead was removed and the game was called over. The Steelers had mad penalties on that game winning drive, the lions had a couple but in the end it would be the Lions would had the worst penalty called against them.
Now The Seasons Result comes down to the Packers losing and The Lions winning each week. If that doesn’t happen, the Lions need to win 1 more game because this would be the most successful 3 seasons in a row in modern Detroit Lions history.
