Kent Syverud, chancellor of Syracuse University, will be tapped as the next president of the University of Michigan, UM Regent Paul Brown said Sunday.
Brown said he “couldn’t be more excited” about the pick and said the role as leader of the university is “his dream job.” Syverud is a former UM associate dean for academic affairs and ex-professor at the University of Michigan Law School.
The revelation came as the UM Board of Regents called a special meeting for 1 p.m. Monday to select a new leader to replace Santa Ono, who left the university in March to pursue the presidency of the University of Florida, a position for which he was rejected by a Florida state board.

“We had an exhaustive search, looked at dozens of candidates from all walks of life from all across the country,” Brown said. “We had great input from the community through listening sessions and town halls, and we had a great search committee that assisted the board, and we were lucky to get the best candidate.”
