“I wish Cade (McNamara) could have played the whole game or gotten more game reps as well, but that was our plan. It’s just so critical for us to develop a second quarterback after going through our situation that we went through last year. … We’re very conscious of that as far as making sure we’ve got great depth at that position and developing those guys.”
4. Lions season’s prediction
Will Taylor Decker injury derail The Detroit Lions?

D’Andre Swift will not have any restrictions on playing time in Sunday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers despite missing the entire preseason with a groin injury, Detroit Lions running backs coach Duce Staley said Thursday.

Asked before practice if Swift will be on a snap count in his first live action since January, Staley joked, “I’m very bad at counting reps.”

“If he’s out there being productive, ‘What number is it Duce?’ ‘Three.’ It could be play 49,” Staley said. “I don’t know how to take (a productive running back) off. I get caught up in the game, he’s going to get caught up in the game and every good player, every good running back that I know, anyway, once you start feeling it, you don’t want to pull him off. We can count the reps Monday.”

Swift sat out all three games this preseason and practiced sporadically for most of August because of a groin injury that flared up at the start of training camp.

Ex-Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson to return for Ford Field ring ceremony this fal

Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions remain at odds nearly six years after the Hall of Fame receiver played his last NFL game, but Johnson will return to the stadium he used to call home for an appearance this fall.
Johnson is scheduled to receive his Hall of Fame ring in a ceremony at the Lions’ Sept. 26 game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Thursday.

Johnson has had an icy relationship with the Lions since the team required him to repay a $1.6 million portion of his signing bonus when he retired after the 2015 season.
