As Severe Weather Strikes Metro Detroit.. YES THAT’S RIGHT ALL NIGHT LONG WE WERE POUNDED BY STORMS. Today Saturday December 11th 2021 WINDS ARE IN EXCESS OF 50 MILES AN HOUR!
Saturday’s forecast in metro Detroit will quite literally blow you away.
Those in the southeast side of the state can expect wind with gusts up to 60 mph, according to Megan Varcie, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in White Lake. A high wind warning is in effect until 8 p.m.
“So we have a strong low pressure system tracking across our area today, which is causing some strong winds,” Varcie said. “The main time frame for these winds will be basically now through sunset tonight, with a peak this afternoon in the wind gust.”
The winds will begin to subside after sunset tonight, Varcie said, and continue to decrease in strength throughout Sunday.
So far, Consumers Energy reports 135,450 customers without power, and DTE reports 84,755.
Although there may be scattered thunderstorms, they’ll likely only last about 30 minutes, according to Varcie, and the main event of concern is the wind.
“We’ll likely see scattered to numerous power outages, tree damage, any loose objects that are unsecured outside to blow away, as well as some hazardous driving conditions for high profile vehicles,” she said.
Temperatures are in the mid-upper 50s Saturday morning, but are expected to drop rapidly as the cold front pushes through.
