Detroit Sports Update 10-20-2021

Read Time:6 Minute, 30 Second

Detroit Lions Lose Yet Again

According to Microsoft Bing The Lions have a 10.5% chance of going 0-17 to become the worst ever. The Detroit Lions hold the distinction of being the first 0-16 team before the Cleveland Browns joined them. Hue Jackson coached an even more dysfunctional Browns team back then. But much like that lead to Baker Mayfield and the 0-16 Detroit Lions lead to Matthew Stafford coming to Detroit there’s hope. However this year’s NFL Draft class doesn’t have the sure fire Quarterback stud in its class.

Average draft position: 3.1

FPI chance to earn No. 1 pick: 30.7%

FPI chance to earn top-five pick: 86.1%

Lions with The Projected Number One Overall Pick-

“The Detroit Lions have the best chance to pick at No. 1 in the 2022 NFL draft, according to the updated draft order projections (1 to 32) from the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI). The Lions are the last winless team in 2021 after the Jacksonville Jaguars broke their 20-game losing streak with a win over the Miami Dolphins in London. With the win, the Jaguars are now projected to have the No. 3 pick.

There already have been five trades involving first-round picks in the 2022 draft, with the New York Giants projected to have two top-11 picks. The Philadelphia Eagles are currently projected to have three top-15 picks, thanks to deals with the Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts — the latter of which involves a conditional pick based on quarterback Carson Wentz’s playing time. After spraining both ankles in Week 2, Wentz has played every snap since.”

Taylor Decker Injury Update-

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2021/10/20/taylor-decker-finger-injury-detroit-lions/6105073001/

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday there is a chance left tackle Taylor Decker could miss the rest of the season with the finger injury he suffered in September.

Decker was hurt four days before the Lions’ season opener on a pass block in practice and has not played this year. The Lions returned him to practice last week, but Decker still is experiencing discomfort in his hand.

Decker practiced on a limited basis last Wednesday, when he took part only in position drills, with a club on his left hand.

On Thursday, he took a smattering of team reps with a smaller protective covering on his hand, then sat out practice Friday.

“Last week when we first started this thing, it looked like this microphone times two,” Campbell said, grabbing the microphone in front of him and flopping it in every direction. “So it just takes a minute to get used to, that’s first of all. That alone takes a minute. Well, then you do that, he kind of hit somebody and now it — well, it’s not like you just nick it, so when you nick it, the whole thing bends backwards and now the knuckle gets pissed off. So all right, let’s do this a little differently and maybe we crop it down. So a little bit of it is just getting comfortable with what that’s going to feel like.”

Red WIngs Hot Start-

The Detroit Redwings have earned 5 points already on the season.

Raymond scores 1st NHL goal, Red Wings top Blue Jackets 4-1

Lucas Raymond made his first NHL goal a big one for the Detroit Red Wings, breaking a scoreless tie at 6:38 of the third period on the way to a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.

Detroit Pistons Season Opener

Number One Overall Pick Cade Cunningham To Miss Pistons Opener-

Pistons guard Cade Cunningham has been ruled out of the team’s season-opening game against the Chicago Bulls due to a sprained right ankle.

Detroit will host the Bulls on Wednesday night without Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NBA draft. Cunningham hurt his ankle early in training camp and did not play in the preseason.

Detroit is counting on the 6-foot-8 guard to help restore success.

The Pistons have earned a spot in the playoffs just twice since 2009, when they ended an eight-year playoff run that included their third NBA championship, two Eastern Conference titles and six trips to the conference finals.

Michigan State Spartans Win-

Detroit Tigers-

Al Avilia doesn’t want to spend

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2021/10/05/not-spending-like-drunken-sailor-but-detroit-tigers-have-ambitious-offseason-plan/6004563001/

Might that scene play out this winter with one of the high-priced shortstops on the market — Carlos Correa or Trevor Story or Marcus Semien — seated between them?

“Just the fact that it’s possible, I think, means we’re in a really good place on this date and time,” Hinch said.

But here’s the reality of where the Tigers are on this date and time: While it is encouraging they have the resources and the will to shop for high-end talent this offseason, putting all their resources into buying a $30-$40 million a year shortstop might not be prudent.

“It’s more broad-based than that,” Avila said. “One player is not going to determine everything. I think we have several needs that we need to tackle in the offseason.

Avila talked about pursuing a proven, veteran starting pitcher and catcher in free agency, as well as trying to upgrade at shortstop.

“Pitching is very important,” Avila said. “We’ve established three young starters (Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning), but because of injuries, it’s set us back a little bit. The injury to Spencer Turnbull is devastating, really.

“And the injury to Matt Boyd, there’s a decision looming there now going into the offseason.”

“The resources will be there,” Avila said. “But I will caution you, this is not going to be spending like a drunken sailor. This is going to be a very measured process. We’re going to make sure whatever decisions we make free agent-wise don’t sink the organization for years to come. We want it to help the organization for years to come.”

Avila, from 2015 through 2020, shredded some $200 million off the payroll. Miguel Cabrera, who is owed $32 million each of the next two seasons, is the last remaining oversized contract on the books. They have salary commitments to just two other players for next season — $7.5 million to Jonathan Schoop and $5 million to Robbie Grossman.

If you want to pick one player who was emblematic of the Tigers’ turnaround in 2021, pick Grossman. He signed a two-year, $10 million contract last winter and produced a career-year at age 31.

On a team that had ranked at or near the bottom of the league in walks and chasing pitches out of the strike zone, Grossman was a season-long object lesson in taking professional at-bats.

He walked 98 times, second-most in the American League.

On a team that was trying to establish a culture of aggressive play, Grossman produced just the seventh 20-20 season in club history — 20 homers, 20 stolen bases.
