As I was coding away on my computer I suddenly realized that it was 4pm and as dark as 10pm outside. The weather from yesterday was insane, highways 275 and i-96 were closed in Farmington Hills and Novi. A powerful storm ripped through the northwestern Detroit suburbs, primarily Farmington Hills on July 7th, 2021. As a result, over 135 thousand DTE customers were without power in southeastern Michigan. Hundreds of trees snapped, causing road closures and property damage. 400 service crews were sent out to restore power as quickly as possible.
Little did we know as we woke up and went to work this was rolling in..
The window I had to stop and try to close… had a broken turn handle and was screwed down to keep flies out. The storm pulled the screw out of the side of my house.
This is me stopping filming to battle the window, you can hear the rush of the wind as the im filming.
Snapped Utility Pole Farmington Hills, Michigan
35 thousand DTE customers were without power in southeastern Michigan. Hundreds of trees snapped, causing road closures and property damage. 400 service crews were sent out to restore power as quickly as possible.
We reached out to the National Weather Service and submitted our storm footage… “Damage assessments and radar imagery reveal a classic damaging micro burst wind pattern (from strait line winds), likely topping out at 70 MPH. Those types of winds can easily do the damage that occurred on the 7th. The video supports strong strait line winds in a wet microburst.” Their official diagnosis of yesterdays storm.
