Following the yearlong “The Last Time is Now” farewell tour, John Cena is calling it a wrestling career on Saturday, Dec. 13.
After debuting with WWE in 2002, Cena has become a 17-time world champion, the most recognized reigns by the company. Suffice to say, Cena is one of the all-time greats in wrestling.
This year has been Cena’s first time wrestling regularly in several years after transitioning to acting — most notably playing the DC Comics character Peacemaker on HBO.
But Cena, 48, will always be known as a pro wrestler first. He was featured in the main event of countless shows and the former Doctor of Thuganomics has been part of several of wrestling’s biggest moments.
More Information About Cena’s Last Match
The biggest episode of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event takes place on December 13. It takes place at Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. There’s no more fitting location for John Cena’s retirement match.
The G.O.A.T will take on Gunther in a match that is set to become a classic. As huge as Cena’s retirement match is, that’s just one of the interesting matches on tap.
When Does Saturday Night’s Main Event Start?
Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII airs Saturday, December 13, 2025, with the main event. WWE is also hosting a Countdown to Saturday Night’s Main Event pre-show starting at 6 p.m. ET on the company’s YouTube channel and social media platforms.
Cena vs. Gunther is the official main event, meaning it will close the broadcast rather than open it. WWE has structured the show so Cena’s retirement bout anchors the final portion of the special. Expect the match and any post-match ceremony to land in the last half-hour of the broadcast, roughly around 9:30 p.m. ET depending on how the rest of the card runs.
